Fake Babalawo's

Beware of Fake Babalawo’s: The Truth About Those Sliding into Your DMs

By Babalawo Ifasesan, Orishas Temple of Light

In today’s digital age, the sacred tradition of Ifá is being misrepresented by self-proclaimed Babalawo’s who prey on those seeking spiritual guidance. Many of these so-called priests reach out through social media, claiming that your ancestors have sent them to you, or that you must urgently perform a ritual. This is not the way of a true Babalawo. A real Babalawo does not seek out clients, nor do they send unsolicited messages promising spiritual solutions in exchange for money. True Ifá priests serve their community with integrity, wisdom, and patience. If someone is aggressively pursuing you online, trying to convince you that you need a reading or initiation, be wary—they are likely a fraud.

How to Recognize a Fake Babalawo

They Slide into Your DMs

·         A real Babalawo does not go around looking for clients. People come to Ifá for wisdom, not the other way around. If someone is messaging you first, claiming that your ancestors sent them, this is a red flag.

They Cannot Properly Chant or Interpret Ifá

·         Many fake Babalawo’s lack the deep knowledge and training required to interpret Ifá. They struggle to recite even the most basic Odu (Ifá verses) and cannot explain the deeper meanings of Ifá teachings.

They Rush You into Paying for Rituals

·         A true Babalawo will never pressure you into paying for rituals, sacrifices, or initiations. Ifá is a sacred practice, not a business transaction. Beware of those who use fear tactics to rush you into spending money.

They Lack Spiritual Discipline

·         Ifá is a path of patience, discipline, and respect. A fraudulent Babalawo will often contradict themselves, spread misinformation, or be more concerned with money than with spiritual growth.

The Damage Fake Babalawo’s Cause

The rise of these false priests has led to many misconceptions about Ifá. They exploit people who are genuinely seeking wisdom, causing confusion and mistrust within the community. Their actions tarnish the reputation of true Babalawo’s and mislead those who are new to the tradition. Unfortunately, some individuals travel to Nigeria, receive rushed or incomplete initiations, and return calling themselves Babalawo’s without proper training. These individuals then exploit others, taking advantage of the sacredness of Ifá for personal gain.

Finding a True Babalawo

·         Look for a lineage-based Babalawo: A legitimate Babalawo will have a traceable lineage, a reputable teacher, and a strong community presence.

·         Seek knowledge and take your time: Ifá is not something to be rushed into. Learn, ask questions, and be patient in finding the right teacher.

·         Trust your intuition: If something feels off, it probably is. A real Babalawo does not need to convince you of their authenticity—their wisdom and integrity speak for itself.

Closing Thoughts

Ifá is a divine system of wisdom, guidance, and destiny. It is a sacred path that requires patience, respect, and sincerity. Those who rush into Ifá for the wrong reasons—whether to gain titles or to exploit others—will ultimately destroy themselves. If you are serious about learning and practicing Ifá, find a legitimate teacher, do your research, and trust in the process. A real Babalawo does not chase people for consultations; they stand firm in their wisdom and allow Ifá to bring the right people to them.

Orí ire o! May your path be blessed.
