The Path of Ifá

The Path of Ifá: Understanding Initiation and Patience in the Tradition

By Babalawo Ifasesan, Orishas Temple of Light

The journey into Ifá is not something to be rushed or taken lightly. Ifá is a living tradition, not a product to be bought in the marketplace. It is a sacred path that reveals our destiny, provides guidance, and connects us to the divine wisdom of Olodumare and the Orisha. Many people approach Ifá with excitement, eager to learn and initiate, but it is crucial to understand the difference between receiving the Hand of Ifá and full initiation.

Consultation: The First Step

Before anything, the first step in Ifá is consultation (Dafá). Through this, a Babalawo reveals the Orí (spiritual essence) of the individual, the forces that govern their life, and the necessary sacrifices (ebo) to bring balance and alignment. It is through consultation that one learns the spirits walking with them, their personal taboos, and the spiritual forces influencing their destiny.

Ifá is not something to be rushed into—unless Ifá itself directs otherwise. The guidance of Ifá must be respected, as it provides the roadmap to an individual’s spiritual journey. Patience is essential.

The Difference Between Receiving the Hand of Ifá and Initiation

Many people confuse receiving the Hand of Ifá (Isefa) with full initiation (Itelodu). These two processes serve different purposes:

Receiving the Hand of Ifá
        •       This is an introduction to Ifá, allowing a person to begin their relationship with the tradition.
        •       It provides insight into one’s destiny but does not reveal the full depth of a person’s past, present, and future.
        •       It serves as a foundation, helping an individual start developing a deeper connection with Ifá.
        •       It offers protection and a spiritual anchor but does not grant the full responsibilities of a Babalawo or initiate.

Initiation into Ifá
        •       This is a transformation, a rebirth into a new life.
        •       During initiation, the full story of a person’s destiny is revealed.
        •       It provides deep knowledge about one’s spiritual path, including what brings prosperity, what must be avoided, and who their spiritual enemies might be.
        •       Initiation allows for a more direct relationship with Ifá and grants the ability to work with its wisdom at a much deeper level.
        •       It is a lifelong commitment that requires discipline, study, and respect.

Ifá is not for those who deceive or manipulate. A liar cannot be a true Babalawo. The wisdom of Ifá exposes all things—truth, deception, and intent. Those who seek to use Ifá for dishonest purposes will ultimately destroy themselves.

Patience is the Key

One of the greatest lessons in Ifá is patience. Many people rush into initiation or seek the cheapest path, thinking they can “buy” Ifá. This is a mistake. Ifá requires dedication, respect, and time. Those who rush into initiation without the proper understanding will find themselves lost, unable to truly benefit from what Ifá has to offer.

A true Babalawo will guide with wisdom, teaching those who seek knowledge with patience. But without patience, nothing meaningful can be gained. Just as one does not plant a seed today and expect fruit tomorrow, one cannot rush spiritual growth.

Ifá is about transformation, guidance, and destiny. For those seeking to walk this path, take your time. Learn, ask questions, and be patient. Respect the process, and Ifá will reveal all that you need in due time.

Orí ire o! May your destiny align with goodness and wisdom.
